Carl Franklin: No Excuse for Boredom

I started programming computers in the 80s and became an author and a conference speaker (about programming) in the 90s.In 1994 I started one of the first popular websites for programmers: Carl &amp; Gary's VB Home Page, and started speaking at programming conferences.In 1999 I started a training company for software developers and became a Microsoft Regional Director.In 2002, I started the first podcast for real software developers: .NET Rocks! Also in the 2000s I became Regional Director of the Year and started consulting and developing software professionally. I edited the first 50 shows myself using what would become Adobe Audition, and I've been hooked on it ever since.In 2004 I created a second podcast (Mondays), an ensemble comedy podcast. This is how Mark Miller and Karen Mangiacotti met. They went on to divorce their spouses, mary each other, and named their second child Campbell Franklin Mangiacotti Miller, after each member of Mondays.In 2007 I built a professional recording studio and recorded several albums for myself and others.In 2011 I release the second album for the Franklin Brothers (Lifeboat To Nowhere), which at the time was just myself and my brother Jay, with a few studio musicians.In 2012 I started using Presonus software (Studio One) and hardware (StudioLive). I still use their products for professional audio, both in the studio and at live gigs.In 2013 I released my first solo album (Been a While) with a song that features Grammy Award-Winning jazz guitarist, John Scofield.In 2014 I published Music to Code By, a set of music designed specifically for helping programmers (and anyone, really) focus on a task. Tracks are 25 minutes each (see the Pomodoro Technique) and are between 50 and 80 BPM, based on research that showed children excelled at math(s) when listening to Baroque music between 50 and 80 BPM. My customers swear by it.In 2015, the Franklin Brothers Band became a working entity. We currently have a rhythm section (drums, percussion, bass, keys, and guitar), four horn players (trumpet, alto sax, tenor sax, and trombone), and a female singer. We have a whole set of Steely Dan covers. The rest of the songs are originals and other funky covers mostly from the 70s.In 2016 I became diabetic (type-2) and started a podcast (2 Keto Dudes) to learn more about the ketogenic diet and track my progress. I reversed my diabetes and lost ~80 pounds.In 2017 I organized Ketofest, a ketogenic food and science festival. So far we have had four events: 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022. People attended from all over the world.In 2017 I became proficient in Adobe products: Acrobat, InDesign, PhotoShop, and Premiere.In 2020, I started a video podcast about programming web applications with Microsoft Blazor (BlazorTrain). In 2021 I started a video podcast about .NET with a focus on mobile apps (The .NET Show).Also in 2021, I started a security-focused podcast called Security This Week with two security experts.In 2022 I became a producer, webmaster, and member of Faith Middleton's All-New Food Schmooze Party Podcast. Faith and her gang were on CT Public Radio for years, and now their show is a podcast.In 2023 I started a video podcast (So you Wanna be a Programmer...) where I teach programming to a professional chef.I have two beautiful daughters from my first marriage and two beautiful bonus daughters. Kelly, my wife, and I live in a semi-rural town in Connecticut.I've traveled the world and met many interesting and intelligent people. I have so many stories that don't fit any of these other media outlets.This Patreon account is a private feed for my friends and fans, where I constantly share my stories and my music.
